COVID-19 Statement

UPDATE: May 1, 2020

Dear Cheat Canyon area climbers:

SARS-CoV-2 and COVID19 are still among us, affecting our communities in many ways. With quarantine, isolation, and distancing being terms we now refer to daily, everyone is absolutely ready for the Stay At Home orders to cease and “life after COVD” to slowly begin. This process will look differently for each state, each region, and each local climbing community.

The CCCC continues to ask our climbing friends from elsewhere to weigh heavily any decision to begin climbing again - this includes traveling for climbing. Many Local Climbing Organizations (LCOs) across the country are currently working with the Access Fund (a national climbing advocacy group) to discuss what our best practices moving forward will be to return to climbing, and the answer is not straight forward.

Some LCOs are asking climbers to consider staying within the response radius of their hometown EMS services if they do decide to go climbing, so that in the event of an incident you are most likely to be transported to medical care within your home region and avoid taxing the curve of other locales. Some LCOs are telling climbers in their region to continue staying home and avoid climbing until we can be sure to have an “all clear” from local government leadership.

At the CCCC, we continue to advocate for our rural community in the Monongahela River valley and Cheat Canyon corridor. Our geography is sensitively located very close to the D.C. metro area, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Many of our climber friends from the Northeast know of and love our Connoquenessing gritstone just as much as we do, but Morgantown and surrounding ruralities still need more time to fight this thing. We are proud of our low infection rate and relative resilience throughout this epic time, but we can’t let our guard down yet. Please avoid the Cheat Canyon zone (including Cooper’s Rock) for now, and we will be excited when we can announce the “All Clear” to resume the sendfest.

Stay tuned to our website for updates regarding our local laws/guidelines for resuming group activities. The best climbing right now is climbing done in-home. Stay safe, stay fit, resole those shoes, the rock can wait! Can’t wait until we can see you at the crag!

Thank you,
Cheat Canyon Climbers Coalition Board
